Note that this announcement has to do with the change of access to PowerSchool Portal.

ASK would like to announce that PowerSchool SIS (access through the website) has made a few changes starting from February 10, 2013.

Below is an example of the StudentID letter which you must come pick up at ASK or ask to be given to you through e-mail/phone.

In the sample are the records of the Student (your child) and the instructions on how Parents get access through the Website in order to see the information, grades and student news, while the method of getting access to PowerSchool Parent portal through IPAD or IPHONE has not changed.

Next, complete the "Link Students to your account" section. Add your child(ren)'s access ID and Access Password data from below. There is a limit of 7 children per login.

Finally, continue adding other children from your family from grades 6-12 if needed. When completed, press the "Enter" button on the bottom left hand corner of your current page.

Notes: Your Username and Password is unique to your child, please keep these logins confidential so that only you and your child(ren) can access their information. This portal is a great way to discuss school and the classes that your child is taking this year.

Grades are posted to the Parent Portal by the teachers. The teacher's grade book is a "snapshot" and does not always accurately reflect the student's overall progress or performance. Grades can have different values in weighting and will vary by particular courses. Please remember that all assignments will be put up as soon as possible by all teachers but some projects will take longer to assess and post depending on their size. If you have questions regarding an assignment, you can always email the teacher.

Please go to the icon called Email Notifications and set up any reports you would like to receive from the parent portal. You do not have to use this, but it's a great way to have information sent to you on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis.

The American School of Kosova is making the decision to honor the historical 100 year Anniversary of Albanian Declaration of Independence, “Flag day.” We will be closing school on Wednesday November 28, Thursday November 29 and Friday November 30 th.

The school days lost will be compensated at a later date. We will announce the make- up days to students and parents on Monday, December 5, 2012

This decision is made in conjunction with Public Schools of Kosova and the Ministry of Education policy.

KOSOVAR AND REGIONAL STUDENT CONFERENCE ABOUT SOCIAL ISSUES

American School of Kosova for the ninth time is organizing a Student Conference with the participation of students from all regions and towns of Kosovo, including Serb North Mitrovica nationality students, as well as Albania, Serbia, Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Kosovar and Regional Student Conference about Social Issues aims to unite students of different ethnicities and regions in an effort to:

• To provide an opportunity for young people to present their research in a professional manner.

• Create an environment in which an exchange of professional experiences between students may happen.

• Create an environment in which young people can engage in discussion and debate on issues important to Kosovo and the region.

• To encourage young people to be active participants in society.

• To build collaborative bridges between youth from different municipalities, regions and ethnic groups.

• To inform the public opinion about the issues the youth face and are preoccupied with and the necessity to solve these problems.

First Kosovar and Regional Student Conference on Social issues was held in 2005 at the American School of Kosova, since then this conference is conducted every year where students with enthusiasm have submitted their work to be evaluated by the committee members.

For many students, this conference is regarded as the peak of their academic achievements, seeing the need to address broader social issues.

Since the realization of the first conference, the organizers objective was the continuous quality improvement and to be inclusive of diversity and representation works.

Year 2008 is the first year when the conference opened for the entire region, including Albania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia and Montenegro.

American School of Kosova hopes that students from different schools from across the region, regardless of their ethnicity, religion or cultural environments, will come together in a spirit of respect and cooperation creating an environment in which we can exchange views on issues that the society faces.

The conference will be held in Prishtina, at American School of Kosovo, which will last two days on 7-8 December 2012, starting at 10:00 in the Amphitheater of ASK.

Deadline for submission of research reports will be November 9, 2012. The report should be submitted electronically to: conference@askosova.org

Participants from other municipalities and other countries of the region except Pristina will be accommodated at the ASK Dormitory free of charge. ASK will pay for transportation and other costs of accommodation for participants.

All students who apply with their work will be rewarded with a certificate of appreciation, while students who were selected for presentation works will be awarded with a brilliance certificate and their works will be published in a book which is published annually by ASK.

Presentations and discussions will be in English, Albanian and Serbian - with simultaneous translation.

The EU’s policies in the Western Balkans – particularly vis-a-vis Kosovo – threaten to undermine its credibility as an international actor and raise profound questions about the very future of its burgeoning Common Foreign and Security Policy.

Supported by the US and most EU member states, Kosovo unilaterally declared independence on 17th February 2008 on the basis of the Ahtisaari plan. The EU is now paying a high price for not being able to speak with one voice on Kosovo, undermining its very credibility as an international actor. As a result, Kosovo’s politicians are continually looking to the US rather than the EU for support and political guidance. With five EU member states continuing to withhold recognition of Kosovo’s independence – both out of their own national self-interests and other fears related to Kosovo’s final status – this stalemate is likely to persist for the foreseeable future.

From a legal perspective, Kosovo’s declaration of independence bore a hole in the legal framework provided by UN Security Council Resolution 1244. With the UN’s Special Representative in Kosovo having made it clear that the UN mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) was not in a position to oppose the new facts on the ground, EU member states – divided between a coalition of the willing and the non-recognizers – deployed both the EU Special Representative (EUSR) and the EU’s Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) Mission. The EUSR – Peter Feith, an experienced Dutch diplomat – simultaneously functioned as the International Special Representative (ISR), who headed the International Civilian Office (ICO). Though the two mandates were strictly independent from one other, the arrangement became rather schizophrenic due to the fact that the EUSR does not recognize Kosovo’s independence, whilst the ICO derived its legitimacy from Kosovo’s constitution and the Comprehensive Status Settlement.

The EU’s rule of law mission (EULEX) – the EU’s largest ESDP mission – was also deployed. EULEX’s status neutrality left a bad taste amongst Kosovo Albanians, who had hope it would provide an affirmation from the EU’s side of Kosovo’s independence and sovereignty. EULEX officials are also well aware that they can only exist and function because Kosovo’s constitution outlines a role for them, in spite of EULEX’s non-recognition of that very constitution.

The international supervision of Kosovo symbolically ended on 10th September 2012, with many international appointees – including from EULEX – retaining their positions within key institutional positions. Many of these mandates have been extended until 2014, including for instance a sustained presence within the Auditor General, the Privatization Agency of Kosovo, the Kosovo Property Agency, the Kosovo Pensions Savings Trust, the Independent Commissions for the Review of Serb Language Textbooks, the Constitutional Court, the Kosovo Judicial Council and the Supreme Court. Despite the closure of the ICO, EULEX and an international military presence will remain. Practically speaking, Kosovo’s fate is related to amendments to UNSC Resolution 1244 depends on Russia, whose political decisions are based on Serbia’s own position towards Kosovo.

So far, four of the five EU member states not recognizing Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence participate in EULEX, but have sent mixed messages regarding Kosovo’s status outside EULEX. Their political behaviour could be interpreted as a willingness to resolve the issue of recognition in a constructive way, whilst at the same time resolving the incapacity of the EU to act with one voice in-line with its ambitions to develop a coherent and consistent common foreign policy.

The coherence and consistence of EU foreign policy was one of the main driving forces that led to the Lisbon Treaty. However, the new treaty makes very few changes on the ground, except for some small adjustments like reducing the number of officials speaking on behalf of the Union. Theoretically, therefore, the EU becomes more supranational rather than intergovernmental. The first and second pillars of the Union will always remain separate, and so will EULEX and the European Commission Office in Kosovo. The real challenge, therefore, remains one of coordination between EU member states, something which no treaty can resolve.

Ever since Kosovo declared unilateral independence in 2008, Belgrade viewed the issues of Kosovo’s status and EU membership as separate; a stance that the EU has largely refuted. Most EU members believe that Serbia’s ambitions to join the EU are tightly interrelated with the normalization of relations with Pristina – perhaps even recognition of Kosovo. The EU is not interested in further unresolved territorial disputes and ethnic conflicts in the Western Balkans, nor in importing such problems into the Union. Asking too much from Belgrade too soon is disadvantageous for Kosovo due to Serbia’s blockade. Asking too little from Belgrade, however, leads to a piling up of problems between Serbia and Kosovo. It is implausible that the EU will risk compromising its foreign policy in the region by accepting Serbia as a member if relations with Kosovo have not been normalized; perhaps even recognition of Kosovo’s statehood.

As a result, the EU risks losing its most powerful foreign policy instrument in Kosovo, especially the normative pull of EU membership. So far the prophecy set out in the EU’s foreign policy strategy about a loss of credibility in the Western Balkans is quickly becoming a reality. The latest opinion polls conducted by Serbia’s EU Integration Office shows that less than fifty percent of citizens endorse Serbia’s EU entry. The concern regarding Kosovo is not whether the EU fails to create a functioning and stable government in Kosovo, but that the EU’s policies in the Balkans lead to a loss of credibility as an international actor and the failure of its Common Foreign and Security Policy. It will be an insufficient excuse if the failure of the EU’s foreign policy in Kosovo – and indeed the wider region – comes as a result of a non-decision, rather than as the result of a wrong decision.

Free TOEFL Practice Courses

- TOEFL FOR EVERYONE-

In cooperation with the US Embassy in Kosovo, American Advising Center and American School of Kosova, starting from October 15 2012, will begin implementing the activity called TOEFL for Everyone. This will be a fourth-month long activity where 20-25 public high school/university students from the Municipality of Prishtina will get an opportunity to attend free four months iBT TOEFL practice courses.

The practice courses will be organized in Pristina at the American Advising Center-American School of Kosova and will be delivered using the most updated test preparation materials. In addition, each student will be equipped with an up-to-date iBT TOEFL Test Prep Book. At the end of the project, January 2013, three (3) students will be awarded with an actual iBT TOEFL Test held at the American Advising Center.

Interested students should:

· Have a solid functional English

· Plan to apply and study at an American or international university in US and/or the world.

· Write a 3 paragraph personal statement where they will describe their academic and extracurricular experiences as well as their professional and academic plans and aspirations.

STUDENT INVITATION

This letter is an invitation for high school students to participate in the 9th Kosovar and Regional Student Conference about Social Issues. This conference—a continuation of the eight (8) other highly successful Student Conferences on Social issues—gathers youth from around Kosova and the region to discuss important social issues. Ultimately, The Kosovar and Regional Student Conference about Social issues aims to bring students from different ethnicities and regions together in the effort to:

· Provide an opportunity for youth to present scientific studies in a professional manner.

· Create an environment in which the professional exchange of student ideas can occur.

· Create an environment in which youth can engage in discussions and debate about issues important to Kosova and the region.

· Generate new ideas and offer potential solutions to social issues.

· Encourage youth to be active participants in society.

· Build ‘cooperative bridges’ among young people from different municipalities, regions and ethnic groups.

· Inform public opinion about issues facing youth and the need to solve these problems.

ASK cordially invites students from high schools all over Kosova, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia to participate in this conference. It is our hope that students from different schools throughout region, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or cultural background, will gather together and create an environment in which participants of the conference can exchange views about issues facing society in the spirit of respect and cooperation.

Yes, I Wish to Participate. What does the Conference look like?

Students will research any social issue they believe is both relevant and pertinent to society. After choosing a topic of research, each student/group of students must then write an original, well-researched and well-argued research paper examining their chosen issue. The final reports will then be submitted and reviewed by a panel of experts. The panel of experts will select the best reports, which will then be presented at the Conference. The selected students will present their in the format of a 15 minute presentation. Following each presentation 15 minutes will be allotted for questions, answers and debate. Throughout each presentation there will be simultaneous translation in all of the languages participating in the conference. At the end of the conference, students who participated in the conference will receive a “Certificate of Excellence”. Those who submitted reports but were not asked to present will receive a “Certificate of Appreciation”.

The Conference will be held in Prishtina at the American School of Kosova. Participants from municipalities other than Prishtina will be accommodated in the ASK dormitories free of charge. ASK will pay both transportation (by bus) and accommodation expenses necessary for the participants.

What I Need to Know?

For those interested in participating in this conference, here is a list of the most important information:

-The final date of submission is November 9, 2012. Reports should be original and authentic. Each report must be submitted by email. Please use the following address conference@askosova.org

-A maximum of three people in each group.-Those selected for presentation at the conference will be notified on November 30, 2012

-The Conference will be a two day event, held on December 7 and 8, 2012, at ASK Amphitheater in Prishtina, Kosova.

Graduation Ceremony

On Wednesday June the 13^th, 2012 the senior class of 2012 graduated. These generation of students will never be forgotten and will leave a lasting impression on the staff of ASK, just as previous generations have. For the graduation ceremony of the class of ’12, there was a musical performance by Ms. Flaka Goranci, as well as the usual speech of Mr. Charlie Launder (our principle) and Mr. Ardian Hoxha (our superintendent). We also had an honorable guest speaker, the mister of Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Rame Buja himself. This year’s valedictorian was Agon Kastrati, who made the traditional valedictorian speech. Let’s not forget that Agon Kastrati is the student of ASK that got accepted to the Ivy League, Dartmouth University with an outstanding scholarship. Afterwards, another tradition was kept, where a slideshow of the generations memories here at ASK was shown. This was followed by a musical performance by one of our soon to be senior student, Dillona Berjani, who then was followed again by, Ms. FlakaGoranci. And last but not least, the diplomas were handed out to graduation class, and thereafter, a cocktail was held.

The students of American School of Kosova with Leadership Professor Aheron Bobaj
Comprised of different ethnic backgrounds, were given a whirlwind tour of EULEX’s headquarters and a lunch with the Head of Mission Xavier de Marnhac.
The Press and Public Information Office gave a lively and interactive presentation of EULEX by presenting some of EULEX’s TV spots which served as a springboard for d...iscussion and questions. EULEX outreach officer, Eldita Tarani said “This is the first time we’ve done such an initiative to allow students to enter the EULEX HQ and get a real sense of the Mission from an inside view” with students from American School of Kosova.
The students were then taken to see representatives of EULEX’s Justice and Police components where they were given a more in-depth picture of how EULEX operates and a chance to ask questions to those in the thick of it.
They were also taken to EULEX’s situation centre which to some may seem like a scene from a science fiction film, with its sprawling maps, wall-sized TV screens, and a busy staff attending gadgets and computers arranged in a starboard bow fashion.
The final finale of the day was a lunch and discussion with the Head of Mission Xavier De Marnhac and EULEX’s Head of Press and Public Information, Nicholas Hawton

The American School of Kosova, with the support of Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MASHT), organized the Knowledge Olympics. This is an activity which aims to promote learning skills, and simultaneously offers fun, competition, and in the end, awards. Olympian participants will be recognized for their knowledge achievements, ability to work in teams, and also their ability to compete. There may also be included students of the same grade (e.g. grade 5-8) that come from different schools. The Knowledge Olympics, beside promoting the educational character, also has a competitive character.

The purpose of the Olympics is not only to assure that students will win awards and other gifts, but to also encourage students to develop their sense of competition. In this way students can gain self-confidence and be more courageous about facing the competition. This is also a great way to motivate students to develop their learning skills. Another goal of the Olympics, is to make students know how it feels to be part of a competition… how it feels to win or lose.

SCIENCE FAIR

American School of Kosova organizes for the second time the science fair which presents the science projects done by students of ASK. The idea is to give the students the opportunity to express their knowledge in natural sciences and to apply it in the everyday life. This science fair is a result of the cooperation between the continuous support of the school, and the hard work of teachers and students.

Students have been mentored by their science teachers for a period of 4 month of cooperative work. They initially presented the idea for the project and after a month they brought the first draft of their proposal. The science department collected all the students’ projects and selected the best ones for the science fair. Aftermath, students started to work in the assigned groups to bring up the final product, and have been supervised all the time by their teachers.

After the completion of the projects, students will present their work in science fair which is held for two days, on April 24 -25 and includes both high school and elementary school students’ works.

There will be a professional jury/committee who will consist of science teachers from different schools of Prishtina and will do a final evaluation of the projects and will select the first three best ones.

The month of March has been a very successful and exciting month at school. Early this month we presented two days of “Arts Alive” show casing our student’s talent in both a musical way and artistic pieces of art. The evenings were well attended and a great success. On March 29 we held the first ASK International Film Festival. This is the third year for this great event and again our students presented their talents and many months of preparation and hard work.

During the spring break from school our senior students and Sophomore/Junior students are on school trips to Verona and Vienna. Nine of our teachers will accompany them and we know they will have a great time. For families who have planned their own holiday time we wish you a most enjoyable time away.

Later in this month we will have the second annual “Science Fair” for high school and elementary students. Parents will be invited to see the great work they do. In addition, interim reports will be issued to students and parents will be invited to meet with the teachers.

An accreditation team from America will be at ASK this month to review our progress and discuss ways we can better realize our mission, vision and values. Their visit and feedback is very important to our school and our future students.

PLEASE NOTE:

The American School of Kosova is announcing the first ever Knowledge Olympics to be held at our main campus May 6 and May 12 and 13. Students from all over Kosova were invited to submit essays about the meaning of success. From these essays 60 teams of 3 students will be invited to answer questions in the areas of science, mathematics and English. On the final day 7 teams will compete for first place honors and a grand prize of a trip to Disneyland in Paris. Other teams will receive scholarships to attend the American school of Kosova.

IMPORTANT:

On Monday, April 30 the teaching staff of ASK will be involved in a professional development day. This day will be to review our accreditation report and further plan for the year to come. On Monday, April 30 a professional development, Tuesday May 1 is the Labour Day holiday and Wednesday May 9 is Europe Day. There will be no school for students on these days.

Muaji Mars ka qenë një muaj shumë i suksesshëm dhe emocionuese në shkollë. Në fillim të këtij muaji kemi paraqitur dy ditë të “Arts Alive" shfaqje që shfaqte talentet e nxënësve ton, në muzikë dhe pika artistike të artit. Në mbrëmje kishte shumë të pranishëm dhe u prit shumë mirë. Më 29 Mars u mbajt Festivali Ndërkombëtar i Filmit në ASK. Ky është viti i tretë për këtë ngjarje të madhe dhe përsëri studentët tanë prezantuan talentin e tyre që kaluan disa muaj duke u përgaditur dhe duke punuar shumë.

Gjatë pushimit pranveror nga shkolla nxënësit të klasës 10-të dhe 11-të janë në ekskurzion dhe do të udhëtojnë për në Veronë dhe Vienë. Nëntë nga mësuesit tanë do t’i shoqërojnë ata dhe ne e dimë se ata do të kalojnë shumë mirë. Për familjet që kanë planifikuar kohën e tyre ne pushime ju uroj pushim të këndshëm.

Më vonë gjatë këtij muaji do të mbahet për herë të dytë “Science Fair” për shkollën fillore dhe të mesme. Prindërit do të ftohen për të parë punën e shkëlqyer që ata bëjnë. Përveç kësaj,” interm report” do të lëshohen për studentët dhe prindërit do të ftohen për t'u takuar me arsimtarët.

Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES)

Ereza Gjikolli, a current sophomore at ASK, is one among seven students in the entire country of Kosovo selected as a recipient of the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program. Ereza will spend her junior year in the USA, free of charge, determined by her performance on tests and her proficiency in English, administered by YES.

She applied for the scholarship in September, and was notified on March 15, 2012 of her award. We are very proud of her! She has asked to be placed in Arizona, Los Angeles, or Manhattan, and will find out her location by the end of March.

Before she departs at the end of August, she will go to Lake Ohrid for a one week orientation program with the other six winners. Students will get to know one another, talk about expectations, what to pack, etc.

Congratulations and best of luck to Ereza on her exciting journey!!

Dear Parents,

The American School of Kosova has today been directed by the Ministry of Education to close our school for the remainder of the week.

The Ministry of education has announced that all public school days missed will be added to the end of the school year calendar.

The American School of Kosova will make up the 7 missed school days in the following changes to the calendar.

Parent /teacher conference days, March 29 and March 30 will be school days for all students. Parent interviews will occur at the request of a parent or teacher and will be held after school during the last week of March.

May 28^th. Memorial Day will be a school day for all students.

Please note:

The students of ASK started school in January, on the 4^th. Three days before all schools in Kosova. We planned this in the event of poor weather and a need for school closure.

The winter break, (reading week) will continue as planned from February 17-24. There will be no school for students. An additional week in June was added last September to the 2012 school year calendar as a result of this break from school.

As of January 2012, American School of Kosova (ASK) has become a school with a smoke free campus. We believe that healthy environment provides an opportunity for functional and successful education and personal well being. It is our hope that ASK servers as a model for other high schools and community in general in Kosova.

ASK announces a call for applications for all high school students from Kosova to submit a proposal for an activity (activities)/event (events) that promotes non-smoking in our community. Consequently, the activity’s motto would be “Don’t light it up. Stop smoking!”

The activity should fulfill one or more of the below objections:
-       inform the public of available cessation services and/or activities and opportunities;
-       motivate smokers’ to want to quit and to take action toward quitting;
-       educate the public about the tobacco industry’s deceptive marketing tactics;
-       inform the public about how the tobacco industry designs its products;
-       educate the public about the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke; and
-       educate the public about the health benefits of quitting.

All high school students from Kosova are eligible to apply.

Students can apply individually or in groups (no more than 5 students per group).

Grant Prize: 300 EURO

Another Success from ASK, this time from Film and Drama! Much Famous, Much stronger, Much Promising

Iliriana Blakaj our school student has just successfully completed her major leading role in English feature film called “ADA” (running time 1:40 min).

Iliriana won among the 300 girls who auditioned to play this key role in the film.

Not only the director but the whole film crews are fascinated by Iliriana's work, while news papers have already started to write about her success.

It is interesting to bring to attention that Iliriana put her knowledge of directing movies she had gained during film and drama classes, to directing even a scene of this feature film.

This film is a co-production between three film companies from England, Kosova and Albania.

According to film producer the feature film "ADA" will take part in film festivals such as Canes, Berlinale and many other film festivals.

Widely known filmmaker Spartak Pecani ends his career with the huge success of feature film "ADA".

In the third edition of International "Ask Film Festival", Iliriana will be a part of the jury among most experienced artist, all of this as the reward of work that she has done.

We are very proud with our students and we will always look forward to supporting them because they are our biggest motivation to work.

Thursday, Dec 15th found the Elementary School presenting a Holiday concert to the delight of parents, teachers and all in attendance. The concert, which began at 11:00, offered a wide range of songs, dances and acting, that helped enliven the festive mood of the holiday season.

The concert began with a beautiful rendition of SILENT NIGHT, performed by Ms. Flaka's 7th grade class. This was followed by Ms. Merita's 3rd grade performing a short play and a dance. We were treated to another dancing score, presented by students’ grade 5-8. All of these were well received by the audience, with more to follow.

Ms. Fatmire's 3rd grade class treated us to a play that took us through a young boy's Christmas story. The 4th grade of Ms. Teuta followed with a play about the Five Best Fairies, a dance medley and a rousing Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.

The students from grades 5-8 put on a slightly different telling of the Night before Christmas, directed by Ms. Erin. The program closed with a solo from Maya Pettigrew, a student in the 5th grade.

Everyone enjoyed themselves and all performance went off extremely well. Congratulations to all.

It is hard to imagine that 14 weeks of the school year have already flown by! We’d like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a happy holiday season – please enjoy your time with family and friends, however you spend our break.

As a reminder, the first day back to school is Wednesday, January 4, 2012.

If you are the parent of a child in grades 3-8, our dismissal procedures will change on our first day back, as part of our continued efforts to ensure the safety security of all our students.

All parents are asked to say goodbye to their child at the entrance door and not to enter into the school on arrival. Parents are welcomed in the school for teacher conferences and special events and for appointments scheduled.

Parents and visitors entering the school must acquire a visitor pass and sign in at the reception desk

Parking and Dismissal Policy

At dismissal time, students will be escorted out of the building, beginning at 3:10 PM, by their teachers. We are asking parents to remain outdoors until the children exit the building. Teachers will bring out their class and send walkers and those picked up by parents, older siblings, or taxi, to the assigned spot in the parking lot.

The parking lot will be closed to cars from 8:00 AM until 2:30 PM, in order to create a safer play area for children to play. Parents may drop off children at the entrance in the morning and will be assisted by our Operations Staff.

Please assist us in creating a safer arrival and departure time for the students.

On Dec. 14, a group of ASK elementary students who have participated in the student life class known as the Charity Club, visited five (5) needy families in Prishtina. Using contacts provided by the Mother Teresa Society, and led to the families by this organization, the students were able to visit with the families.

The visits were very moving and the students of ASK came away from each with a different view of life. The families that were visited were found to be in need of many of the basics of life and our students felt excited that they were able to provide some small measure of help.

The families were given clothes that had been collected by the students in grades 3-8. We were also able to purchase three meters of wood from monies collected. The wood will provide some warmth to the families that do not other means of heating their homes. Also collected and distributed to the families were various food items that the students brought in.

During the visits, our students got to meet the children that were at home and to ask questions that were not too personal.

The visits were very moving and the ASK students came away with the desire to provide more help and new ideas about collecting and distributing future collected items.

We would like to thank all the students who helped out with this rewarded experience, those who brought items in, those who collected money for wood that who gave and those who went on the visits and help bring a small ray of light into the life of those less fortunate then ourselves.

Coming soon the ASK Film Festival, 2012

The ASK Film Festival will be held on 28th of March 2012. The third edition of ASK Film Festival will be an international competition, where all high schools shall participate with short films, short documentaries, and animated short movies.

The founder and director of this festival is Hareza Basha, the professor of film and drama at the American School of Kosova. In this edition we will have professional judges, special guests, artistic program, and lots of other surprises. The public surely will enjoy it.

Mother Teresa Society teams with ASK high school leadership class

An important part of our high school leadership course, taught by Mr. Aheron Bobaj, and our two Mother Teresa Society lead contacts, Mirlinda Gojani and Sara Koenig, has introduced our 18 students to the concept of ‘Building Community Profiles: Lessons for Student Researchers.”

A University of Prishtina professor of sociology taught Mirlinda and Sara how to conduct a PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal), who then shared the methodology with Charlie Launder (Principal), Jane Ostrander (Program Coordinator), and Mr. Aheron. We were all very excited to hear how our students would be working with younger students from a small town outside Prishtina, called Keqekollё.

The PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal), is an approach within social research that allows for local people to “share, enhance, and analyze their knowledge of life and conditions, to plan, and to act,” and enhance the ownership.

Students were introduced to the guiding principles of PRA: sensitivity to others’ needs, respect for others’ beliefs & values, good communication skills, active listening, patience, learning from others, humility, close observational skills, flexibility, staying open to new things, learning from one’s mistakes, and a respect for others’ privacy.

They also learned to rely on the following methods of good research: collect & analyze information from locals, emphasize strong communication – especially through listening, maintain a holistic view of the community, use both verbal and visual learning, verify data with at least two other sources, learn step-by-step, emphasize diversity instead of simplifying what is complex, and use your best judgment to remain objective.

The relationship with MTS, the school in Keqekollё, and our ASK students and teacher began on Monday, December 5, with an introduction to PRA, done by Miss Sara and Miss Mirlinda, in Mr. Aheron’s classroom. The following Monday, students travelled to Keqekollё to meet their new buddies, where they had a great time! In the remaining weeks of semester I, students will collect information and identify community problems.

8th Kosovar & Regional Conference about Social Issues

Held in Prishtina, Kosova at the American School of Kosova, the Kosovar and Regional Student Conference about Social Issues provides both a unique educational opportunity for students and a space to engage in social activism. The conference gathers from Kosova and the region (Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia) to discuss social issues relevant to their lives. The conference offers the opportynity for students to hone the essential academic skills necessary for success in an academic post-secondary environment. The conference is such that it encourage civic participation and social activism, seeking to create an environment in which youth can live up to the conference's motto and main goal: "understanding social responsibility"

GOALS OF THE CONFERENCE

The Kosovar and Regional Student Conference about Social issues aims to bring students from different ethnicities together in the effort to:

- provide an opportunity for youth to present scientific studies in a professional manner.

- create an environment in which the professional exchange of student ideas can occur.

- create an environment in which youth can engage in discussion and debate about issues important to Kosova and the region.

- generate new ideas and offer potential solutions to social issues.

- encourage youth to be active participants in society.

- build 'cooperative bridges' among young people from different municipalities, ethnic groups and countries.

- inform public opinion about issues facing youth and the need to solve these problems.

ASK cordially invited students from high schools all over Kosova and the region to participate in the conference. It was our hope that students from different schools throughout Kosova and the region, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or cultural background, would gather together and create an environment in wich participants of the conference can exchange views about issues facing society in the spirit of respect and cooperation, gatherd and discussed passionately social issues of a wide rang of topics.

Dear Parents of High School Students,
We want to inform you that this year we implemented a student elective choice course selection. As you know students in the High School must receive 27 credits to graduate with a diploma from the American School of Kosova. Each year students must take, English, Mathematics, Science and History classes. In addition they must have Albanian literature and Albanian history and as well students must take two foreign language classes and one physical education class.
Students may also choose from a selection of elective choices to make up 7 credits per year. These courses include Geography, Graphic Design, Film and Drama, and Foreign Languages in French, Italian and German.
Student choice course selection requires us to issue individual timetables for all high school students. This exercise has involved many hours of preparation. The addition of 50 new students in the last week before school started caused problems with class size. It became clear that we needed to add new classes and move students to reduce class size numbers. We have had to make adjustments to teacher schedules and student timetables.
The teachers and Mr. Emin worked all weekend to complete this task. This week we will finalize all student timetables and class size issues.

On August 2nd, 2011, the Superintendent of the American School of Kosova, Mr. Ardian Hoxha accompanied by his friends paid a visit to the family of Kosova’s most recent Hero Enver Zymberi, to express their most sincere condolences to the family members of the police officer who lost his life during the action in North Mitorvica on 25th of July, in commitment to the protection of the territory of Kosova.

The Zymberi family was assisted with a financial support of more than 8,500 € by the ASK and its friends. Besides this, the Superintendent of the School, Mr. Aridan Hoxha has committed to free education of the four (4 ) children of our most recent Hero. “No financial means can replace the loss of your son nevertheless we hope to at least ease the lives of Enver’s children and your family with this support. Since I grew up without a parent myself, I understand the position of Enver’s children and his spouse therefore I would ask you all to take care of his children and his spouse as much as possible because their loss is the hardest. I would also ask you to ensure that they receive proper education and make their father proud. Më 2 Gusht 2011, kryedrejtori i shkollës, Z. Ardian Hoxha i shoqëruar nga miqët e tij i bënë vizitë familjes së heroit më të ri të Kosovës, Enver Zymberi, duke shprehur ngushëllimet më të sinqerta familjarëve të policit që humbi jetën gjatë akcionit në veri të Mitrovicës në përkushtim të mbrojtjes së teritorit të Kosovës më 25 Korrik të këtij viti.

Familja Zymberi është ndihmuar nga ASK dhe miqët e saj me një shumë prej 8,500 €. Përveq kësaj kryedrejtori i American School of Kosova, Z. Ardian Hoxha ua ka mundësuar shkollimin falas 4 fëmijëve të heroit tonë të ri. “Asnjë shumë e të hollave nuk mund t’a zëvendëson jetën e humbur të birit tuaj, por me ketë ndihmë shpresojmë që sado pak fëmijëve të Enverit dhe familjes suaj t’u lehtosohet sadopak jeta. Meqë edhe vetë jam rritur pa prind dhe e di se në çfarë gjendje janë fëmijët dhe e shoqja e Enverit, andaj ua lë amanet që të përkujdeseni sa më shumë që mundeni për fëmijët dhe shoqen e Enverit, sepse këta e kanë më së vështiri, dhe ua lë amanet që të përkujdeseni për shkollimin e fëmijëve në mënyrë që t’mos ia marrin fytyrën babait të tyre. Me këtë rast Z. Hoxha poashtu theksoi se Enver Zymberi, “heroi i kombit”, do të mbetet gjithmonë në zemrat tona dhe më tërë përkushtimin do t’i gjindemi familjarëve të tij. Z. Hoxha poashtu ua dha një mesazh edhe policëve dhe ushtarëve tjerë të pranishëm që “të mos frikësohet asnjë ushtar apo polic të jep jetën për liri dhe vatan, sepse ne, populli, nuk do t’i lejmë në rrugë familjet dhe fëmijët e tyre”.

Graduation Ceremony

The 8th annual graduation ceremony is completely organized by the American School of Kosova. It will be held Today, on June 13th in the Red Hall starting at 18:00. Seniors will be graduating this academic year, portraying the succes of the school's prosperity in academics. The graduation will includ two hours of guest speakers; school administration speakers; valedictorian (Blendrit Elezaj - senior student representative selected according to highest GPA); and a 10 minute slideshow of seniors student' experiences throught their high school years. The ceremony will end with the distribution of the diplomas ( honor and hight honor graduation) to the students, followed by a coctail party where parents and students celebrate the success of the students.

ASK student breaks SAT record

Agon Kastrati has broken the record for our school ( for Kosova as well) in SAT score with 2060 points.

The SAT Reasoning Test is a standardized test for college admissions in the United States. The SAT is owned, published, and developed by the College Board, a not-for-profit organization in the United States. Most colleges require the SAT.

Agon Kastrati, a student in Junior 4, has received a score of 2060 on the SAT test. He has set a new record in our country, the previous one being 1950. When we interviewed Agon Kastrati, he said that it was hard but that it is achievable, because hard-work is always repaid.

According to him, his greatest obstacle was overcoming his fear because the SAT was new to him. He states that although he was afraid, he really did not have any time to think of fear, because he had to concentrate on the questions.

The SAT tests English- Reading &Writing- and Mathematics. Each section has a maximum of 800 points. On the Reading Section, Agon got 620 points. On the Writing Section,

he got 700 points and on the Math section he got a score of 740, which is a great score.

This score is a great stimulation for Agon and many others that want to study abroad.

“Agon is not Chinese”,said the Math teacher mr.Gazi “and any of you can achieve this score.”

All it takes is hard-work and determination.

Science Fair

The Science Fair was perhaps the most entertaining event held in the American School of Kosova this academic year. It was established for the first time in our school this year but seemed to be arranged as if it was a traditional event. The Co-Creators Arjeta Camaj Ibrahimi, Skip Lee, Ilirjana Imami Morina and Jeremi Horton created the event aspiring self-student development, independence and group collaboration skills. The science fair was a show where each participant had the opportunity to present their experiment to a series of judges and hope to be awarded for their work. We hope to continue this wonderful experience and will try to make it a tradition in our school. Three awards were handed to the top three projects from both High School and Middle School. The High school winners of this year Science Fair are the following:

1) Gezim Basha and Rron Ulaj (in collaboration with many more seniors) - Successful Rocket Launch

2) Blerta Kuka and Ermelinda Haziri-Measuring Food Calories

3) Zana Aliu and Valentina Daku- Soap Formation

ASK Film Festival

On May 10 & 11, American School of Kosova hosted the 2nd ASK Film Festival. The first day included

film projects by ASK students. Film projects that were presented in the first night of the festival were

“La vie en rose” directed by Oliver Dahan, presented by Dea Grajqevci, Blendina Islami and

Blerta Fona. “The Kite Runner” directed by Mark Forester, presented by Alketa Bucaj and

Delvina Blakqori. “Black Swan” directed by Darren Aronofsky, presented by Flaka Shoshi, Janina

Mehmeti, and Zana Aliu. “The Fountain” by Darren Aronofsky, presented by Rron Ulaj, and Rinesa

Deshishku. “Precious” presented by Gresa Statovci and Kosovare Lladrovci. “I Am Sam” Presented by

Blerta Kuka, Ermelinda Haziri, and Ilirian Haziri .

In 2nd night of the ASK Film Festival movies that were made by high school students all over Kosova

were presented. Members of the Jury were : Kushtrim Hoxha- actor; Armond Morina – actor; Nehat

Fejza – producer; Luan Jaha – actor; Vlora Merovci – actress; Yll Citaku - director.

The jury gave awards for the best movies on different categories, The award for the best screenplay

was given to “Head Up High”, written by Flaka Shoshi, Janina Mehmeti, Agron Rexhaj, Arber Lajqi,

Nora Krasniqi, Petrit Tashi. The award for the best Editing was given to Altin Gojani and Visar

Dyla. The best film was from “Nerds to Pimps” by Lis Dafota. According to the artistic director

Hareza Basha the students that participated in the ASK Film Festival are more important stars than

Hollywood stars because they represent the youth of Kosova.

The School Trips

ASK lists school trips on its “important things to be done” section in the annual agenda. Apart from the

tradition of organizing senior trips, ASK arranges different for all students. However, there are certain

standards required before one may quality for the trip. Some of these standards include the grade point

average, proper behavior and attendance.

Let’s begin with seniors. Previous generations have organized trips to United Kingdom and Italy. This

year, seniors are going to France. The location was decided through student voting. They had to choose

between Paris or Vienna/Budapest. Paris, the chosen destination, also known as the city of lights, is a

must-see place in the world. It has beauty enclosed in itself which ASK students are going to explore.

Paris also has a great cultural background, which was a key factor in building its worldwide reputation.

Apart from Paris, Berlin is the next city ASK is “conquering”. However, this time the subjugators are

our sophomores. They have chosen Germany as their destination. Besides Paris, Berlin is also a worth-

seeing place because it contains many tourist attractions and entertainment sights. Sophomores will be

spending seven days exposed to such magnificent beauty.

Meanwhile, freshmen are organizing a tri of their own. This particular trip will take place in Italy. It looks

like a boot but it is a country of historical treasures. Another thing that has inspired these freshmen to

decide their destination was literature. They have read about Romeo and Juliet and they have decided

to visit Verona and Venice, and enjoy the beauty of Italy in these specific places.

All these trips are organized by our school with the help of different travel companies. The trips will be

supervised by school staff at all times. Also, the trip takes place during the spring break.

ASK Film Festival

Ask Film Festival was established in the year 2009-2010 by the support of the American School of Kosova.

The founder and director of this festival is Hareza Basha, the professor of Film and Drama at the American School of Kosova.

For the first time in September 2009, Hareza Basha programmed the Film and Drama curriculum at the American School of Kosova.

Ask Film Festival was held for the first time on February 8th 2009 by presenting three short movies and a documentary, done by students of American School of Kosova -Film and Drama class.

The professional members of the jury of the first edition of Ask Film Festival were: Fatos Berisha (producer), Gresa Pallaska (actress), Blerim Gjoci (actor), Nehat Fejza (producer) and Samir Karahoda (photographer), who evaluated the films and awarded the participants accordingly.

The second edition will be a national competition, where all high schools of Kosova shall participate with short films and film projects .

The entire high school will be able to participate with a short film in duration from 3-30 minutes. They can also compete with analyses of world-wide famous movies which they will present during the festival. The deadline is February 28th 2011.

Regional Student Conference

December 10^th and 11^th, 2010 marked another successful Kosovar and Regional Student Conference about Social Issues. This year’s conference was the seventh year that the American School of Kosovo has put on this event.

As an academic event, the Kosovar and Regional Student Conference about Social Issues gathers students from across Kosova and region, regardless of cultural, ethnic, or religious affiliation, to discuss social issues pertinent to their lives. The Kosovar and Regional Student Conference about Social Issues have several important educational objectives. Specifically, the conference seeks to

· provide youth of the region with the opportunity to present scientific studies about social issues in a professional manner,

· create an environment where youth people can engage in discussion and debate about issues society faces,

· generate new ideas and offer potential solutions to social issues,

· encourage young people to be active participants in society,

· establish cooperative bridges among young people throughout the Balkan region, and

· Inform the public about the issues young people face and the need to solve these problems.

With these goals in mind, the organizers of this year’s conference received many well-written and well-researched social scientific reports about various social issues. Specifically, the issues discussed at this year’s conference, and the studies included within this booklet, ranged from topics examining people’s perceptions of government corruption in Croatia to studies that attempt to assess the “religiosity’ of Kosovar youth. Viewed cumulatively, the conference participants, illustrated by the studies presented within this booklet, clearly show the social and academic potential of this region.

Organizing this successful conference was the joint cooperation of many individuals and institutions. The organizing staff of the conference is very grateful to the American School of Kosova’s administration, faculty and students who were always willing to assist when help was needed. We would like to express our gratitude to Mr. Adrian Hoxha, the superintendent of the school, Mr. Charlie Launder, the school principal, and Mrs. Igballe Blakaj, the school administrative director for all their help throughout the planning process. We would also like to express special thanks to Ms. Jane Rinehard and Mr. Scott Frank for assisting us with proofreading and editing tasks.

But the biggest thanks and congratulations must go to all the students who dedicated their time and energy to make this conference happen, and who brought their enthusiasm and insights to the two days of intense debate about social issues.

Thus, it is with utmost gratitude that we say “thank you and well done” to all those individuals who made this important event happen.

Open Forum at ASK

An open forum for all parents of Elementary and High school students was held on Tuesday, November
9th . The aim of this event was to discuss the issues that most concern parents and the school, talk about
goals and directions for the future and to form a Parent Council that would meet on monthly basis.

Principal of the School Mr. Charlie Launder made short presentation of school success planning and
expectations of the American School of Kosova. In this forum also was given an opportunity for parents
to make questions and suggestions regarding school matters.

The ASK admin team would like to thank all the parents on a great meeting. We had a lots of new ideas
and suggestions to take into consideration. The parent contribution and feedback is very important for
growth of success and development for the American School of Kosova.
