Grade 9

At ASK, we believe that curriculum must be based on a current, clearly articulated progression of Standards of Learning. These standards and corresponding Benchmarks must be sequential and dynamic to meet the needs of our unique students. At ASK we use standards of learning from the AERO curriculum, which we believe provides quality learning and success for our students in the 21st century.

Our goal in choosing this curriculum we believe provides opportunities for students in their studies to utilize problem solving, inquiry, discovery and self-direction as well as creative and critical thinking.

All students are expected to carry a full program of studies. Grade 9 corecourses include English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, French/German, Albanian Literature, Albanian Culture/History, Physical Education/Health and Elective courses.

English

Grade 9 English is a mandatory high school English course. Students will follow the following topics:

Reading Standards for Literature:

Key Ideas and Details, Crafts and Structure, Integration of Knowledge and Ideas, and Range of Reading, Level of Text Complexity and Quality.

Reading Standards for Informational Text

Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure, Integration of Knowledge and Ideas, and Range of Reading, and Level of Text Complexity.

Writing Standards

Text Types and Purposes, Production and Distribution of Writing, Research to Build and Present Knowledge, and Range of Writing.

Speaking and Listening Standards

Comprehension and Collaboration, and Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas

Language Standards

Conventions of Standard English, Knowledge of Language, and Vocabulary Acquisition and use.

Geometry

Geometry is a mandatory high school mathematics course in grade nine. The major area covered includes the following:

  • Congruence
  • Similarity
  • Circles
  • Expressing Geometric Properties with Equations
  • Geometric Measurement and Dimension
  • Modeling with Geometry

Physical Science

Grade 9 Physical Science is a mandatoryhigh school science course which includestwo specialized areas of study, Scientific Inquiry, and Physical setting. Students are introduced to the conceptual foundations of these two disciplines. Major areas covered include the following:

Scientific Inquiry

Students will:

  • demonstrate their understanding of the importance of curiosity, honesty, open-mindedness, and scepticism in their own efforts to understand how and why universal phenomena exist and occur
  • communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly.
  • be familiar with the character of scientific knowledge and inquiry and how it is achieved.
  • be able to select and use tools and instruments to conduct scientific activities.
  • understand and demonstrate the ideas of system, model, change, and scale in exploring scientific and technological matters.

Physical Setting

Students will:

  • be familiar with current scientific theories about the universe and how those theories evolved.
  • understand how key features of the earth influence climate, weather, and the water cycle.
  • understand scientific theories of how the earth’s surface is formed and how those theories developed.
  • know and understand scientific theories of the nature of matter and how those theories developed.
  • be familiar with the forms and transformations of energy and the significance of energy in understanding the structure of matter and the universe.
  • understand how society uses and conserves various sources of energy.
  • understand the relationship between force, mass, and the motion of objects.
  • recognize gravitational, electrical, and magnetic forces as major kinds of forces acting in nature.
  • be familiar with the wave nature of sound and electromagnetic radiation.

Social Studies: World Geography

Geographyis a mandatory high school social studies course in grade nine. The major area covered includes the following standards:

Students will:

  • understand patterns of change and continuity, relationships between people and events through time, and various interpretations of these relationships.
  • understand causes and effects of interaction among societies, including trade, systems of international exchange, war, and diplomacy.
  • understand the concepts of geography and demography and how geography and demography influence and are influenced by human history.
  • understand cultural and intellectual developments and interactions among and within societies.
  • understand social systems and structures and how these influence individuals.
  • understand why societies create and adopt systems of governance and how these systems address human needs, rights, and citizen responsibilities.
  • understand how societies have infwenced and been infwenced by scientific development and technological development.

French/German

French/German focuses on students beginning to develop their ability to communicate in French/German. Communicative competence is divided into five areas of study: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparison, and Communities. Students are introduced to the conceptual foundations of these five areas.

Communication

  • Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics.
  • Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.

Cultures

  • Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studies.
  • Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studies.

Connections

  • Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language.
  • Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its cultures.

Comparisons

  • Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own.
  • Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.

Communities

  • Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting.
  • Students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment.

Albanian Literature

Grade 9 Albanian Literature is considered a preparation for students to comply with the requirements of the Ministry of Education. Such preparation culminates in students writing the National Exam as a way of qualifying for university entrance.

Albanian Culture/History

Grade 9 Albanian Culture/History is considered a preparation for students comply with the requirements of the Ministry of Education. Such preparation culminates in students writing the National Exam as a way of qualifying for university entrance.

Physical Education/Health

Grade 9 Physical Education/Health is a mandatory course.

Elective Subjects

Students in grade 9 are able to choose from a selection of electives which includes Art, Business, Psychology/Sociology, IT, Photography, Graphic Design and Film/Drama.
