Grade 6

At ASK, we believe that curriculum must be based on a current, clearly articulated progression of Standards of Learning. These standards and corresponding Benchmarks must be sequential and dynamic to meet the needs of our unique students.

To that end, at ASK, we use specific standards of learning chosen from AERO Common Core State Standards. We believe that in doing so, we are able to meet the values and mission of ASK and provide quality learning for the leaders of tomorrow.

At ASK we are dedicated to using exemplary educational practices to provide students with a strong academic foundation. Our goal in designing our curriculum is also to address the affective domain. We wish to provide opportunities for students in their studies to utilize problem solving, inquiry, discovery and self-direction as well as creative and critical thinking.

To ensure alignment and current pedagogy, we utilize a school wide curriculum review process where we review Standards and Benchmarks and match those with quality textbooks and learning resources.

All students are expected to carry a full program of studies. Grade 6 yearlong core courses include English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Art/Theatre, Physical Education and Albanian.

Grade 6 students are required to study the following subjects:

English

The Grade 6 English student is an active participant in classroom discussions. He or she presents personal opinions, understands differing viewpoints, delivers a formal speech, participates in dramatic presentations, distinguishes between fact and opinion and analyzes the effectiveness of group communication. Each student builds on the study of word origins and continues vocabulary development and reads a variety of fiction and nonfiction independently for appreciation and comprehension. A Grade 6 student demonstrates the correct use of language, spelling and mechanics by applying grammatical conventions to writing and speaking. They begin to establish a formal writing portfolio which contains samples of polished writing and which reflects attention to drafting strategies, composition style and matters of correctness.

Albanian

Albanian represents a progression from Elementary Albanian to Middle School Albanian. Students read and write compositions in Albanian with a focus on the preliminary study of syntax. Students summarize novels and simple poetry to develop their verbal skills in language. Students become more familiar with the more advanced genres of the literature as they advance from Grade 6 to Grade 8. Students who may have weak Albanian skills may qualify for Albanian ALS support. This will be discussed with the Albanian Teacher and Principal before a decision is made.

Mathematics

Grade 6 Mathematics places continued emphasis on the study of whole numbers, decimals and rational numbers (fractions). By the end of Grade 6, a student masters the four arithmetic operations with whole numbers, positive fractions and positive decimal integers. All students will accurately compute and solve problems. They will understand the concepts of mean, median and the mode of data sets and how to calculate the range. A grade six student uses ratios to compare data sets, make conversions within a given measurement system, classify two-dimensional figures and collects, analyzes, displays and interprets data using a variety of graphical and statistical methods. They begin using integers and percentages and investigate numerical and geometric patterns.

Science

Students in Grade 6 Science develop an understanding of the scientific process as they survey the physical and life sciences. Students continue to emphasize data analysis and experimentation. Scientific methodology and focusing on precision in stating hypotheses is strongly reinforced. The concept of change is explored through the study of the transformations of energy and matter. Students focus on integrated topics which include water in the environment, the sense organs of the human body and on basic chemistry concepts. Natural resource management, its relation to public policy and cost/benefit tradeoffs in conservation policies are introduced. Science process skills such as observation, classification, inferring, predicting, comparing, contrasting, measurement, interpreting data, use of numbers and communication are a key focus throughout the year.

Social Studies and Geography

In Social Studies and Geography, students study the world’s peoples, places and environments with an emphasis on world regions. The knowledge, skills and perspectives of the course are centered on the world’s population and cultural characteristics, landforms and climates, economic development and migration and settlement patterns. Spatial concepts of geography are used as a framework for studying the interactions between humans and their environments. Using geographic resources, a Grade 6 social studies student employs inquiry, research and technology skills to ask and answer geographic questions. Particular emphasis is placed on a student’s understanding and the application of geographic concepts and skills to their daily lives.

Physical Education

Students in Physical Education Grade 6 combine fundamental skills into more complex movement forms in modified game, dance and recreational activities. Co-operative and competitive small-group games are appropriate, emphasis being on developing skills and tactical understanding. Students use feedback to initiate and maintain practice to improve skill performance. Students assess their health-related fitness status and set reasonable and appropriate goals for development, maintenance and improvement. Social interaction becomes more complex as peer pressure becomes increasingly pronounced, impacting upon individual performance. Students solve problems and make responsible decisions as they work together. They exhibit a physically active lifestyle at school and outside the school environment. Students participate in PE on a daily basis.

Art

In Grade 6 Art Mixed Media, students use the elements of art and the principles of design as a framework to explore a variety of experiences and concepts. Using expressive and technical approaches, students investigate various two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art. Students critique artists’ meaning, focusing on their use of form, media and symbols. Students develop their own ideas regarding what makes a work of art and in the process will encounter philosophical and ethical questions. Upon the successful completion of Grade 6 Mixed Media, students possess the skills that allow them to evaluate the effects of various influences on the discipline of the visual arts.

Theatre

Theater arts are an important part of the lives of all students and the community. Our program is designed to promote the development of the individual’s need for dramatic self-expression. The program strives to develop the ability to appreciate the role theater arts plays in the improvement of the quality of our lives. Exposure to and appreciation of theater traditions from western and non-western regions and cultures is fundamental to our philosophy. Our department recognizes and benefits from the great variety of cultures represented at ASK.
